Our Thanksgiving Alone

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays, likely due to all the wonderful food. For most of my life, I have spent Thanksgiving surrounded by my parents and extended family.

Two years ago, I moved away from my family to marry my husband Chris.  Since we got married, we have hosted Thanksgiving at our home.  The first year, Chris's parents spent Thanksgiving with us.  It was my first time hosting Thanksgiving, much less cooking a turkey.  Luckily, there were no major incidents and the meal was a success.  Last year, my parents came up for a visit.  While I did a decent job with the food, I was pregnant at the time and still dealing with morning sickness (even though I was 5 months pregnant at the time).

This year, we are hosting no one. It will be our first Thanksgiving with just us.  It seems strange to me, but I welcome it.  We were invited to go on a cruise with my family for Thanksgiving, but since Chris has overnight shifts to work (his job requires odd hours) that wasn't possible.

I'm sure we will make way too much food, but we don't mind. We love left overs.  We also welcome the opportunity to start traditions with our daughter.

So, while my family (parents, sister and her family) will be spending time in Mexico tomorrow, we will be enjoying the fall temperatures here in Illinois, eating a home-cooked meal, watching parades and football, and being thankful for our day.  That is pretty wonderful, in my estimation.
